Overview: 

Using the Future of Libraries for and With Teens: A Call to Action report, badge earners will consider a philosophy of service for their work with teens today and into the future. To earn this badge the learner will:

  • Read the YALSA Future of Library Services for and with Teens: A Call to Action report.
  • Select a current library program or service they think can be re-envisioned to move forward with the ideas presented in the YALSA report.
  • Develop and publish a plan for updating/revising/reimagining the program or service selected.

Goals: 
  • To give badge earners the opportunity to better understand the needs of youth in a mobile and digital age
  • To give badge earners the opportunity to better understand connected learning within the library and teen context
  • To give badge earners the chance to re-think their programs and services to better meet the needs of youth in the 21st century
Tech required: 

Google Drive apps. You will develop Google Docs as a part of earning this badge and link to each of the items you create when you are ready to submit your badge for review and feedback. (A getting started with Google Apps screencast is available.)

Steps: 
  • As you work on the steps in this badge earning process remember to consult the badge rubric and keep in mind the requirements of the rubric and how to create a set of high-quality project materials.

  • Read the YALSA Future of Library Services for and with Teens: A Call to Action

  • Create a list of the programs and services and partnerships that your library currently offers for teens and their families. Review the list within the context of the YALSA report and select one that you think is a prime candidate for re-envisioning within the context of that report. Use the template provided to help you through this process.

  • Once you have selected the program or service to re-envision develop a plan for the process you will go through to do the work required. The plan should include (A template Google Doc is available.)

  • An overview of the current program and why it is a good choice for re-development/re-envisioning.

  • An overview of the revision to the program and why the changes would be beneficial to teens in the community.

  • Information on what types of advocacy and/or buy-in efforts will need to be a part of the project. For example, what type of administration approval will need to be in place?

  • Information on how teens will be involved in the development of the revision to the current service

  • A timeline for the developing the program or service

  • A budget for re-developing the program or service

  • An example of how the re-developed service will be evaluated

  • A statement on how this redeveloped service supports the YALSA Futures report

  • Before submitting the materials you created for review by the badge earning community, remember to consult the badge rubric and keep in mind the requirements of the rubric and how to create a set of high-quality project materials.
